Vlisco&co X Ghana 2nd Edition - Heritage & Storytelling
"Our story is a celebration of the life of Yakoba Frenchie, a cycle of life from Ashasiɛ (The beginning), to Onyini (Growth) and Ohemaa kɔ nahinfiɛ (Death).
That’s where her grandson Stevie’s inspiration for this collection comes from. We bring Yakoba back to life, by reviving and celebrating her ability to recognise and pick up on the different versions of herself, and thus live through the different stages. We reimagine her in a fishing community, where she was born, a place full of very raw textures, freedom, disruptiveness, calmness, sun, water, sand, a space of plenty and emptiness. This is where she herself found the inspiration to express her emotions and reflect the times. In Ghanaian culture fashion plays a major role in marking any milestone (birth, coming of age, death) in ones life cycle. Yakoba expresses the different stages of her life in her strong sense of fashion. This is her signature imprint in heritage which is reimagined in Steve's collection"
